At retail (face to face) business locations a customer will hand their credit card to the cashier for payment. The first thing the cashier does is enter the dollar amount of the sale, and then they will take the credit card and swipe it through a credit card machine.

The machine then transmits the data from the credit card to the “processing network”. The processing network returns either a “declined” or “approved” response. If approved, the transaction will get batched out by the terminal at the end of the day with the rest of the day’s transactions.
In order to learn what an internet payment gateway is, and how it works, you must first understand how a credit card machine works. Typically a couple days later the money from that sale is deposited into the business owner’s bank account.

This process works a bit differently if you don’t see your customers face to face. If you have a website selling products or services, you obviously still need the ability to accept credit card payments as well. Since your customers will typically be ordering from their homes (or work), it is not possible to swipe their card. This is where an internet payment gateway comes into the picture.

An internet payment gateway is basically a “credit card machine” for your website. There are usually four key pieces that are needed for a business to accept orders online (website, shopping cart, internet payment gateway, internet merchant account). First you need a website with products or services for sale… that is pretty obvious. Next you need an online shopping cart. This cart basically adds up all the items you would like to buy and then formats the order so that it is ready for the next piece of the puzzle.

The internet payment gateway comes into play next. It collects the information from the cart, such as the $$ amount, customer information, billing address, etc, etc. The internet payment gateway then acts like a “credit card machine”. It sends encrypted data back and forth over the internet. It is communicating with the processing networks, seeking authorization on the customer’s credit card. The internet gateway needs to have an internet merchant account MID programmed into it in order communicate with the processing network. Once the transaction has been completed (usually in 2-5 seconds), it will pass either an “Approved”, or “Declined” response back to the shopping cart and then lets the customer know that their transaction is complete.

As you can see an Ecommerce business owner needs a lot more than just a website. The shopping cart, internet payment gateway, and internet merchant account play necessary, key roles in turning a website into an “ecommerce enabled” website. TakeCardsToday.com offers both internet merchant accounts and the payment gateway to go with them. In fact, one of our internet payment gateways, DowCommerce even includes an ecommerce shopping cart at no additional cost.

This may seem like a silly question, what with the decreasing amount of paper money, but whether or not a hair salon needs a merchant account is certainly a valid debate. The short answer is yes; hair salons should be accepting credit cards. Credit cards have become the prime payment method for many customers and having a credit card is a matter of convenience for many people.

Hair salons provide many luxury services, not only haircuts. Because of this, their clientele typically includes the exact sort of people who carry a credit card. A hair salon could lose out on quite a few customers by limiting their payment options. Many women go to the hair salon for more than just a cut and style. They may also want to get a manicure and a pedicure. Continue reading →

Many hair salons have become more like mini day spas, and many offer facials, peels, and massage treatments. After spending a day at the salon, a man or woman could rack up quite a bill. If the business doesn’t have a hair salon merchant account, they are limiting their payment options, and as a result they will seriously limit their clientele.

There is another side to this though, and we must keep in mind that having a hair salon merchant account can be a significant expense, and it is ultimately up to the hair salon whether or not they have one. It is important to weight the pros and cons carefully as to whether or not a hair salon merchant account is absolutely necessary. You should look at how many of your regular clients pay with a credit card, and also at whether the other salons (the competition) have hair salon merchant accounts.

If there is a salon across the street that offers the same services that you do, but they accept credit cards and you don’t, you could lose a lot of business to the competition across the street. This is just one reason that it makes sense to have a hair salon merchant account. It’s also a known fact that when you broaden your payment options, you also widen the demographic of potential clients. There is a definite advantage to having a hair salon merchant account, and that is guaranteed payment. Most businesses do not accept checks at all anymore, because there is too high of a risk of fraud. When your client pays with a debit card or a credit card, you are told immediately whether the transaction is approved or declined. This gives the business owner piece of mind in knowing that the money is in the bank. There is no waiting for the checks to clear. It is also a better avenue of payment than cash is, because having large amounts of cash on the premises can be a risk also. If you have a hair salon merchant account, there will be less cash to deal with, and less of those annoying bank runs. This all translates into a safer and more productive work place.

In an increasingly technological world, the amounts of payment options available are, quite frankly, astounding. For anyone with a small business, what you choose to use for your payment processing is ultimately your decision, but you will want to weigh in many factors when you choose your POS terminal. Issues such as cost, how easy the terminal is to use, and how reliable it is should be at the forefront of your mind when you weigh your options. For this reason, the Nutrit 2085 is one of the most popular POS terminals on the market right now.

The Nutrit 2085 is an affordable machine. Because it comes with a built in printer, and can handle most electronic transactions, it cuts down on costs because buying added equipment is unnecessary. The Nutrit 2085 is a pos terminal that can handle phone cards and electronic benefits transfers, on top of the debit and credit transactions. As an added bonus, the built in printer is a thermal printer. This means that it doesn’t use a ribbon. And as most of us know, replacing printer ribbons can be quite costly.

This pos terminal is also incredibly easy to use. Everything is clearly labeled, and the display has a high contrast that makes it easy to read. Also, because of its thermal printer, it is also an extremely reliable machine. Your transactions are processed quickly with a very decreased risk of malfunction. Every small business owner knows of the frustration of lost sales when the debit machines are down. If you are using a pos terminal that is prone to malfunction, this can translate into a significant amount of lost sales over the course of the year, greatly affecting your bottom line. It’s quite an awful feeling when you see potential customers walking out of your store because they have no way of paying because your pos terminal is out of order. The worst part is that, as a business owner, you are powerless to fix the problem and must rely on the repair service.

For this reason, the Nutrit 2085 is one of the most popular pos terminals on the market. Not only because of its affordablility, but also because of its cost- effectiveness. By using the Nutrit 2085, you can increase the number of transactions, meaning more money in your pocket. It is an incredibly reliable machine, and you will not have to worry about it malfunctioning as much as you would with many other pos terminals. You will lose fewer sales, which means more money in your pocket. You also don’t have to worry about buying expensive accessories and replacement parts. The bottom line? If you want to build a business that people can rely on, it is necessary to choose a payment-processing machine that you, as a business owner, can rely on. The Nutrit 2085 is one such machine that can increase your bottom line and decrease the worry and the headache that is an inevitable part of trying to start and grow any business.
